Losing Weight a Little Step at a Time

This morning I read in the newspaper that a local man had lost over 200 pounds. How did he do it? With exercise and cutting back on what he ate. At 370 pounds and five foot five inches tall at one point his girth (distance around his waist) was longer than his height. He said, “I didn’t realize a man could have a waist size longer than his height”.  He had to wear expandable, sweat pants because there are no off-the-shelf pants in those waist sizes.

He started exercising by driving himself about a hundred yards and walking away from the car and back. After a while he was able to walk around his apartment complex. Now he weighs 156 pounds and feels great.  When he was heavy, he had to take medication for diabetes. Life is so much better for him now. Just imagine how much less stress it is on his heart! His cholesterol must be much better and he’s taken himself out of a life threatening situation into a much more heart-healthy style of life.

I’ve always thought that it is the little changes that can mean so much. Life goes by one day at a time, and if a person makes little adjustments, over time things can change in big ways.  For example take the stairs instead of the elevator. If it’s too much to do everday at least do it every other day.

I used to treat myself to a candy bar everyday. The thought occurred to me one day that if you piled all those candy bars on a table, in two or three months you’d have one heck of a pile. And that’s how many sugared-candy bars I would be eating. How much weight would I gain? Or rather how much weight would I lose if I didn’t eat a candy bar a day? So I ate one candy bar every other day; then every third day, and in a month or so I ate one every so often until now when I seldom eat candy at all. And I have lost weight and kept it off.
