LDL Cholesterol
LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol is considered
'the
bad' cholesterol, and HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol is
considered the 'good cholesterol'.Cholesterol is a steroid which is
made in the body and is needed by the cells to perform many important
functions. LDL cholesterol particles carry cholesterol wrapped in a
protein sheath
to the cells. HDL particles are used to gather up and remove
any
extra cholesterol. To properly control the LDL level, the ratio of HDL
to LDL must be within
certain limits.
When there are many more LDL particles than HDL particles the capacity
for artery-wall damage increases and so does your risk of heart
disease.
You can inherit high levels of LDL cholesterol.
And you
may have high concentrations of LDL cholesterol as a result of the
foods
you eat. In any case, if you want to lower your LDL cholesterol, you
can start by considering your heart-disease risk factors: Are you a
smoker? Do you
eat a lot of fatty foods - especially fast foods? Do you eat a lot of
off-the-shelf pastries and confections? Do you eat large portions of
meat? In short do you take in a lot of fats and carbohydrates?
Human physiology developed thousands of years ago when
early
men ate from the land. They ate nuts, berries, fruits, certain roots,
and animals when they were lucky enough to kill one. All these edibles
were filled with vitamins and minerals and other nutrients that the
human body adapted to. Today we have fast food restaurants and
processed foods that have enhanced taste. All these foods are
re manufactured and are far from the natural ones that our bodies
require. It is hard to find a simple back-to-nature meal in any
restaurant or if you do find such a meal it is very costly. But by
returning to that old diet of early man your body will feel better and
you will be lowering your LDL blood level.
